Metal Screen Planters: What to Check Before Planting

A metal screen planter brings greenery into the same footprint as an outdoor divider. To make that arrangement work, inspect the planting space as carefully as the panel above it. A tall screen does not tell you how much usable root space sits below.

Find out what the planter contains

Ask whether the base is a planting trough, a cover for removable pots, or a cabinet with a separate insert. Each arrangement needs a different planting and maintenance plan. The outside height may include a frame, shelf or storage area rather than usable soil depth.

Request internal dimensions and a drawing of the base. Identify where the liner or insert sits, how it can be removed, and which surfaces will be in contact with growing medium. Confirm that the materials and coatings are intended for the proposed use.

Follow the water

Locate drainage openings before positioning the unit. Ask whether excess water exits directly onto the paving or through a supplied outlet. Keep the discharge route away from door thresholds and places where people stand.

If removable pots are used, check whether water can collect underneath them. Access to the bottom of the planter is useful for inspection and cleaning. Avoid adding a liner that blocks the designed outlet, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for any liner or insert supplied with the product.

Select plants for the actual conditions

Check sun exposure at the intended location rather than relying on how bright the patio looks at midday. Note the planting depth, watering access and mature spread of the plants you are considering. Ask a local nursery to match these conditions to suitable plants.

Decide whether you want plants to remain below the screen, trail over the planter edge, or climb. These are different arrangements. Climbing growth may cover the pattern and make fasteners harder to inspect; hanging containers add their own loads. Confirm approved attachment points and load limits before adding either.

Leave a way to prune and replace plants without reaching awkwardly around the screen. For a commercial seating area, include maintenance access in the furniture plan so the plants can be tended without dismantling the layout.

Check the complete unit before filling

Inspect the panel-to-base connections and confirm the intended installation method. Do not assume that soil weight replaces specified anchors. Establish the final position and drainage route before filling; a planted unit may require a different handling method from an empty one.

SeeYes Garden’s geometric screen planter product page provides a starting point for discussing this format. The wider metal screen range also shows other configurations. Ask for the exact drawing and contents of the model being quoted, including whether planting inserts are included.

When requesting a proposal, send the site dimensions, intended plant arrangement and whether the surface is ground-level paving or an elevated structure. You can share those details with the team before choosing a finish. The planting plan and the metalwork should be considered together from the start.
